Carole's "Children" ![]() |

Aunt Carole never had children so her pets became her babies. She really loved animals and the house was always filled with dogs and cats. At one time she had a six dogs! Carole spoiled her "kids" and always made sure they were taken care of. They were groomed every week and got lots of exercise. The pets were well-behaved but Carole still got into trouble with her neighbors because of the barking. One of her biggest heartbreaks was when her favorite Great Dane Donner (who she nicknamed Sweetums) died in 1944. Carole's nieces and nephews loved coming to the house and playing with all the pets. Her niece Sharon can remember riding Dippy (the Great Dane) like a horse. Carole told a reporter she had a "collection of miniature dogs" which included her poodle Missy, Sensible and Foolish the Cocker Spaniels, and the puppies Army and Navy. Carole also had three malamute huskies. She couldn't stand to see an animal in pain and was always rescuing strays. Carole once rescued a pregnant cat and was devastated when it had to be put to sleep. When she had to go to England to film a movie she brought her poodle Gina with her. After Carole died her sister Dorothy took Dippy, Gina, and Miss C. the cat. Unfortunately they couldn't afford to keep Dippy so he was given away to a friend. Miss C. got very depressed without Carole and eventually died of cancer. ![]() This is 11 year old Carole (in the middle) with her older sister Dorothy and their childhood dog.
