| Meeting her fans Aunt Carole had millions of fans when she was alive and today her fan base is bigger that ever. People all over the world keep discovering how amazing she was. Carole truly loved her fans and she showed it by personally answering all the fan mail she got and signing autographs for anyone who asked. During one appearance she signed over 1000 autographs! Some of the fans who wrote to her even became her friends like Peggy McKenna who was one of the first people to write Carole a fan letter in 1936. They kept writing to each other and eventually Peggy moved to Hollywood and became her secretary. Carole also got many letters from a devoted fan named Merrill. When Carole visited New York City she actually met him and took him out dancing. This is something most big stars would never do but Carole really appreciated everything her fans did for her. They even started a fan club for her called "The Carolers". Now she did have some problems with obsessive fans. While filming A Scandal In Paris a man broke into her dressing room and tried to grab her. One fan even committed suicide after hearing about her death! I have been lucky enough to talk with and get to know many of Carole's fans and I feel like we have all become part of Carole's "family". ![]() With her fan/secretary Peggy ![]() The obsessed fan who got too close Messages From The Fans: From Elizabeth at Carole Landis Online - I love Carole - she is my idol! Of course she was a great beauty but she was also a talented actress, a great writer, and she had a lovely singing voice. Carole was kind and generous woman who just wanted to find true love. Like many fans I feel a very special connection to her and I want her to be remembered. I truly believe Carole sent her niece Tammy into my life and I'm very grateful for that friendship. I created the web site so more people would learn how amazing Carole was :-) From Norm in New York - THE GREAT PATRIOT...Born into a family of poverty and parental neglect, Carole Landis none-the-less somehow raised herself up above this to overcome these two great obstacles to success in life...Forsaking a Hollywood life of ease and pleasure for herself, she instead chose to dedicate herself to faithfully and extraordinarily serving those men and women of our nations armed forces during one of it's greatest crises. From Mark in Colorado - My Father was a WWII Vet (Normandy Invasion Utah Beach), we had many conversations about the hardships the soldiers faced being so far away from home. Carole also knew of these hardships and stepped up at the expense of her career and personal time. Her love and dedication to our soldiers and fans will never be forgotten. ![]() A fabric drawing made by a fan in the 1940's From Steven in Tennessee - I learned about Carole while reading about Hollywood and WWII. Carole was not only a Pin Up & Hollywood starlet but she visited troops not only at home but traveled the globe to bring a little joy to those serving their country in a time of war. For some it may have been their last bit of happiness as they never made it home. RIP Carole you have my utmost respect and admiration. From Jen in California - What I love about Carole can be expressed almost completely in the impression given by a photograph I saw of her this morning. She is cuddling a puppy - how many images of her and dogs there are! The light and love and joy in her eyes, and the pure kindness of her spirit shine through, as I know they did the many servicemen this great American patriot entertained in her shows during the war. From Gary - Carole had something on screen that makes you not just want to be a fan, but makes you want to have a sort of a bond. It's like she’s someone you know in real life. The huge stars are "bigger" than life and stay at a certain distance on that celluloid. But when you see Carole on the screen, I think of her as someone reachable. Someone real. ![]() A poem written by a fan in 1944 From Jezebel in Texas - I adore Carole because she was such an amazing woman! Not just a pretty face, she was a very talented actress and singer, a great intellectual, and a true patriot. She inspires me. Pit of loneliness, How easily she falls in. No knight to save her. ...Instead, she was abandoned. It will never be the same. From Kay in Texas - Carole Landis was one of the most beautiful women in the world and she should have been one of the biggest stars of the 1940s, but she never got a break from the studio or the men in her life. Despite the possibility that she took her own life, she gave of herself so endlessly, that she should be an inspiration for all of us. ![]() Fans Sherry and Jamie with his Carole tatoo From Jamie - Carole was someone that I always remembered growing up. Her obvious talent and kind heart that never stopped giving made a lasting impression, not only on me, but many. I have heard other people talk about having a strong connection with her, to the point of feeling that you had known her, almost that you had lived in that era. I understand this because I also feel this connection. If this is true, I have been truly blessed to maintain these feelings of a great friend and true icon of this time. From Sherry - I was not familiar with Carole until I was introduced to her by my husband. He has a collection of her books, movies, pictures and radio broadcasts. I was immediately impressed by her abilities. What impressed me the most was her selfless devotion to the troops during WW II in her USO shows. Her passion and love are truly inspiring. From Bruce in Florida - I have to say that I didn't know a lot about your aunt, but I did know from my late father, a vet from the 2nd war, first Lt. Milton Powell, a bit about her. I know that he was at one of the USO shows, was a big fan, and probably spoke with her too. He was a big time fan of the cinema and the wonderful actresses of the day. I know he was very impressed by your aunt Carole, and the selfless tireless devotion to those serving their country. It has never really been made clear to the public, I think, that she made more appearances for the overseas men in arms than anyone else. It's easy to see a lot of Carole Lombard, who lost her life in doing that, in her. It's such a shame about the tragic end to the wonderful life that she had, even with its problems, but we all have them, and it seems that she adjusted a lot better than most to me. ![]() Signing autographs ![]() Aunt Carole's signature (Photo from Carole Landis Online) * We want to hear from Carole's fans!
